Tens of thousands of people around the world are now using a freepersonal-safety mobile app that allows friends to virtually walk you home at night.

University of Michigan, ena ^

The Companion app. created by five students from the University of Michigan, enables uesers to request a friend or family member to keep them company virtually and track their journey home via GPS on an online map.

Although they can do so , the friend or famoly member does not need to have installed the Companion app , which is available for both Android and IOS.

The user can send out several requests to different phone contacts in case people are not avavilable to be a companion or not with their phones at the time.

Those contacted then receive an SMS text message with a hyperlink in it that sends them to a web page with an interactive map showing the user walking to their destination,If the user moves away from their path falls,is pushed ,starts running ,or has their headphones pulled out their phones, the app sense these changes in movement and asks the user if they're OK. If the user fine, they press a button on the app to confirm within 15 seconds. If they do not press the button,or real emergency is occurring ,the Companion app transforms the user's phone into a personal alarm system that projects loud noise to scare criminals from the scene, and gives you the chance to instantly call the police.

The app was originally designed to aid students in walking home at night across university campuses. If the user calls 911. the app will also alert(向……發(fā)出警報)the person's relevant university campus safety department within the US. but this feature is only applicable to universities that have signed up to work with Companion.

At the same time, the app will send an alert to the contact who is keeping you company, and

that person can choose to call the police and give them your location, as well as call you to find out if you are OK.

On top of calling the police and alerting their chosen companion, users can also select an :I am nervous” button in the app, which tells the app where and when they feel unsafe. Companion's creators said that in just one week after launching the second version of their app, they collected 500 incidents where students across multiple university campuses felt unsafe. 28. Are you an optimist ? Do you look at your glass and see it as half full?Do you believe that every cloud has silver lining and things generally turn out for the best? Do you believe that if something is meant to be ,it will be ? If you reply “yes”to all of these questiongs, then you are an optimist.Youprobably are enthusiastic , cheerful and outgoing .You may be successful at work and in love.

But you may be misguided because things don't turn out for the best. You

may believe that when one door lcoses another one opens(for example, you may fail to obtain a new job;another chance will come around soon). Wrong one door lcoses, another door slams(怦然關(guān)上)in your face. That's bitter reality.

Now a book has been pubished which confirm what Pessimists(悲觀者)have suspected all along,

its called The positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for the lings by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, What's interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successfull people, so their low opinion of the situation's outcomes is noi realistic. They use it to motivate themselves to perform better .”

So far. so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have a back-up plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution. For example, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. believe

And “Don't count your chickens until ThEy hatch.” To have a confident and optimistic approach to life's problems is good. But listen to what Woody Alien, the American comedian says. “Confidence is what you have before you understand the problem.”

There are pros and cons to being an optimist and a pessimist Don't feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are a realist. Bui lighten up and hook up with someone who sees the same glass half full.

32. What's The passage mainly about? A. book that has recently been published. B. How to become successful in life C. The dangers of being too optimistic. D. The benefits of defensive pessimism.

33.The underlined sentence “This is not rocket science”(PARA.4)means . A. its not a dangerous thing to do B.it is quite simple to understand C.the cost is not so high D. there is no real proof.

34. Which of the following English expressions would a defensive pessimist believe? A.Don't put all your eggs B.The glass is half full not half empty. C. Whatever will be, will be. D. Every cloud has a silver lining. 35. What would the writer probably describe himselfas?

A. an optimist B. a defeatist C. a realist D. a scientist 其次節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

38 The fun comes partly from guessing the winners for every game. Fn com friends. Husbands against wives. Colleagues against bosses.
